Unlike Pompeii, Herculaneum was a smaller and wealthier seaside town. Today, it lies on the shores of smaller cities, Ercolano and Portici, that brings to life the ancient site accidentally founded in 1738 by a bunch of lucky well diggers. Uncovered for 1,700 years under 25 meters of ash and gas that later solidified into volcanic tuff, the site, once founded by Greek God Hercules, is much better preserved than Pompeii although smaller and totally worth visiting! So, hop off that train and go back into an ancient wonderland (with your mind too) until you totally lose it and beat yourself up for playing tomb raider all day. Don’t miss the train back before sunset otherwise somebody else will beat you up. J.K.
